Current trends show that eBook sales are soaring, and eBooks are starting to dominate Academic and professional sales. Many schools and universities are starting to opt for eBook versions of textbooks. And with the rise of smartphones, tablet devices, and affordable eBook readers, they are becoming more accessible and convenient to consumers.
The Association of American Publishers announced that eBooks had surged and established a foothold as the most popular format for reading in the US. Results from February 2011 saw eBook sales triple from just a year ago to $90.3 million. The jump made it the most popular format for books in the US, outpacing paper in every category the AAP covers.
Barnes & Noble executive Marc Parrish predicts that eBooks will dominate book sales in an absolute sense in just two years. This shift towards eBooks as the dominant format of books will forever alter the publishing industry.
It is unlikely that paper books will ever fully disappear, but they are likely to become more rare in the future.
